About Brand Satellite
Need help creating, developing or communicating your brand?
Brand Satellite is a multi-award-winning brand consultancy, based in Melrose, with clients across Scotland and the UK.
Brand Satellite helps purpose-driven, founder-led businesses to think, look and act like big brands. Giving you, your team, and your customers clarity, confidence and courage in your business.
Through my 3-stage process, I help small businesses that have never thought about their business as a brand before, have bootstrapped a brand as they have gone along, or are not making the most of the brand they already have.
You don’t need a big city, expensive agency. You need someone with big agency, big brand experience but someone who also understands the challenges of starting and growing a small business.
I help businesses with little or no in-house brand and marketing expertise with all aspects of brand creation, branding and brand communications, including marketing, advertising, design, websites, exhibitions and social media.
If that sounds like you? Let’s have a chat.
About Giles Etherington
My career can be condensed into three sections:
The Corporate Creative
I was the youngest-ever art director to join J. Walter Thompson in London (part of the world’s largest advertising network), where I spent 11 years creating famous and award-winning advertising campaigns for some of the UK’s best-loved brands, including Andrex, BT, Nestlé and Kellogg’s.
I then moved to J. Walter Thompson San Francisco for 12 months, during the height of the dot-com boom.
The Creative Nomad
In the early noughties, I freelanced across Europe, with stints in London, Amsterdam and Athens. Working with multi-national clients including Heineken, Mitsubishi, TDK and Volvo.
I was in at the start of MVBMS Fuel Europe – an advertising agency set up in Amsterdam to handle the pan-European Volvo account.
I helped set up a new advertising, design and marketing agency in Jersey, which involved acquiring another agency and temporarily becoming the Executive Creative Director.
I also became the Creative Director of an advertising and marketing agency in Edinburgh, which was part of Bob Geldof’s Ten Alps multimedia empire.
The Strategic Consultant
Pretty much every career move has been to a smaller agency, where I have been afforded greater strategic input. The ultimate culmination of that journey was to set up my own business.
Following six years of running my own advertising and design agency (which I grew to a turnover of £250,000), I set up Brand Satellite to focus on my passion for brand creation, branding and brand communication.
Today, I use all the knowledge and experience I have gained from working with some of the world’s most famous brands to help founder-led businesses to think, look and act like big brands.
The GC Index
In 2020, I was profiled by The GC Index as a Strategist/Game Changer.
As a Strategist, I am at my best when I am able to see and clearly articulate direction, change and action within a strategic context that takes account of organisational, operational and people needs. This capability reflects my ability to see and analyse patterns and trends in relevant data.
My Game Changer score suggests I am very open to new ideas and have the imagination to ‘see’ what is possible in ways that others often don’t.
My Implementer profile suggests that I will bring energy to getting things done.
My Play Maker score suggests that I can take on the role of facilitator and orchestrator in teams, although my Strategist profile suggests that I am most likely to lead with a need to shape purpose and direction.
“I’ve now worked with Giles on the launch of three businesses.
The main reason being that Giles is not only a creative force to be reckoned with but unusually for a creative brings both commercial nous and delivers on time and on budget.
In effect, it’s like having the advantages of a big London agency without the commensurate fees.
To date, our work together has resulted in the first company being sold for £50m, the second became the fastest growing broadband firm in the UK, and the third is showing great promise.
These successes are in no small part due to Giles’ brand-building expertise.”
